Why We Do What We Do

Dear Eric and Susan,

In the fall of ’09, my daughter Jolene had a senior picture shoot with you.  I am sure for you it was a very typical shoot…young girl, athlete, sports props, many outfits, a spastic cat, and a hovering mom.  You both were patient and kind with our questions and worked at making Jolene’s senior pictures memorable and beautiful.  When it was time for her to be photographed with her beloved cat, Peanut, it was not an easy situation.  The cat had clawed me severely, and was working on letting Jolene know he was not into modeling.  You, Eric, patiently persisted and with the teamwork of you and my daughter, a couple of beautiful poses were captured with Peanut and Jolene.  I especially appreciate how you insisted on getting the cat to look straight into the camera rather than settling for the many head positions that were off to the side or in the air.

Little did we know Peanut would unexpectedly and suddenly pass away just a few short months after the photo shoot.  He became noticeably ill over Valentine’s weekend, but nothing alarming.  On Monday night we were planning for a vet visit the next day, but Peanut passed on Tuesday morning.  It is not the way Jolene wants to remember her Senior year, but it is unchangeable, and life unfortunately requires us along our journeys to say painful and untimely ‘good-byes’. However, we can enjoy moments of the past through things such as photography and looking at those beautiful shots of Jolene with Peanut brings more comfort than I can express.  This cat was a true companion, and yes, a friend, to Jolene since she was five years old and we are grateful to have such wonderful pictures to remember him by.  To add to the beauty of these photos are the gorgeous expressions you caught of Jolene, even while Peanut was resisting the moment. The photos are a true depiction of how special Peanut was to my daughter.  Of course, all the photos are incredible, but the ones with Peanut are especially precious for us now.

So when you are going through your day-to-day routine of “capturing moments,” be encouraged to know you are helping to record moments which will be forever cherished by your clients.  If you had not taken the time with Peanut and Jolene, we would have missed an irretrievable moment, but instead we have a priceless record of a special relationship between a young girl and her beloved pet.

Thank you for capturing a moment that we will forever treasure.

With much gratitude,

Debbie Neuberger
